The most extraordinary performance of the weekend was surely that of the Neal Morse Band on Sunday afternoon. Neal Morse was founder-member, along with his brother Alan, of Los Angeles-based quirky progressive rock band Spock's Beard, whom I saw in London a few years back. Neal also played with the globally representative progressive band Transatlantic, along with Roine Stolt of Flower Kings, Pete Trewavas of Marillion and Mike Portnoy of Dream Theatre. He had achieved the success and rock stardom he sought. As stated on his website, to quote: "The proverbial wayward son, Neal had finally found the success he sought. On the outside he seemed to have it all. On the inside, however, something was missing. Morse came to realize that for him, embracing the Christian faith was the fulfillment of his spiritual quest. Yet he also began to find his career growing at odds with his faith." Morse's subsequent solo releases, embraced his new-found Christian beliefs, culminating in the Sola Scripture and Beyond DVD, released in 2008.

The performance at Lorelei was astounding, the music progressive, the message abundantly clear. A poignant moment came during the encore, when, speaking from heart, he introduced his terminally ill son and performed a duet with him about father and son trying to reach out to and understand one another, given the situation. By his own admission, this wasn't necessarily encore material, yet, to be sure, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. It was an extremely brave testimonial. The band was the same one that featured on the Sola Scripture and Beyond DVD, mostly Dutch musicians, with the exception of the precocious talent of guitarist Paul Belatowicz, who hails from Brighton, England. Paul is also a member of the Carl Palmer Band.
